One of the most popular questions I see in my inbox and around online teaching groups is ‘Can I teach English online without a degree?’
Let me answer that for you…

Yes – you sure can!
Don’t get me wrong, it is more difficult securing a job than for those with a degree (especially native speakers with degrees), but it is still very possible.

I’ve compiled a list of companies that allow you to teach English online without a degree.
5 Companies That Allow you to Teach English Online Without a Degree
Verbling
Verbling describe themselves as ‘The modern way to learn a language’. In addition to teaching English, the platform also offers 70+ other languages, so if you speak another language, it’s also worth looking into that.
With Verbling you set your own rate and availability, the platform then connects you with students via video chat.
The company has a 3.8 out of 5 on Glassdoors.

Palfish
I have a lot of personal experience with Palfish. It’s a fantastic platform that utilizies an interactive curriculum with easy to use teaching tools (it is all done via mobile phone). Unfortunately, Palfish isn’t what it used to be in its hay day due to the enforcement of Chinese online learning regulations in 2021, but it is still a viable option for those looking to teach English online without a degree in 2023.
Cambly
Teachers on Cambly earn by minute, not per class or per hour. For every 60 seconds a teacher spends talking to a student, their balance increases.
There are no minimum working hours, so teachers can work as little or as much as they’d like. Cambly processes payments every Monday via Paypal.

Italki
Italki is another online ESL platform that hires applicants without a degree. It is popular among teachers because it offers a variety of payout options – Paypal, Bank transfer, Payoneer and Hyperwallet.
In addition to teaching English lessons, Italki also has an affiliate program which allows teachers to earn a $10 commission for every new user they introduce to the platform.
Please note that job applications must be submitted via laptop pr desktop and not mobile phone. Don’t ruin your chances of success before you even start.

Open English
Open English requires either a degree or TEFL.
Teachers working for Open English provide online ESL lessons for students across South America. They require teachers to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week, offer both 1-1 + group lessons, and pay between 7-13USD per hour.

Whether you have a degree or not, having a TEFL certification will put you a step ahead of other applicants. It is not only required by some companies, but shows potential employers that you’ve invested in the teaching ESL profession and take it seriously.

If you don’t have your TEFL just yet, I recommend PremierTEFL:
